Sick Time

This policy does not apply to temporary or freelance workers, who are not entitled to sick time unless required by law.

The Company provides paid sick leave benefits to all regular full and part-time employees for periods of temporary absence due to illnesses or injuries.

Regular full-time employees are permitted up to five (5) days per calendar year. Regular part-time employees are eligible for a prorated number of sick days. Sick days are not cumulative (they do not carry over from one year to another), nor are employees paid out at termination for unused sick days.

Sick time is to be taken only when an employee is medically unable to perform his or her job, and is not to be taken for vacation or personal use. Employees may use up to half of their annual sick time to care for a sick family member (child, parent, spouse, domestic partner or domestic partner’s child).

Employees are required to provide reasonable notice when they will be using sick time and must notify their immediate Manager and/or Human Resources Partner of their absence before the scheduled start of their workday when possible. The direct supervisor must also be contacted on each additional day of absence.

If an employee is absent for five (5) or more consecutive days due to illness or injury, a physician’s statement must be provided verifying that the employee was absent due to illness or injury and its beginning and expected ending dates. Such verification may be requested for other sick leave absences as well and may be required as a condition of paying sick leave benefits. Unexcused absences may subject employees to disciplinary action, up to and including discharge. Any employee absent due to a work-related illness or accident must promptly notify their Human Resources Partner to file a Workers’ Compensation claim.*
Sick leave benefits will be calculated based on the employee’s base pay rate at the time of absence and will not include any special forms of compensation, such as incentives, commissions, or bonuses.

As an additional condition of eligibility for sick leave benefits, an employee on an extended absence must apply for any other available compensation and benefits, such as Disability.

Sick leave benefits are intended solely to provide income protection in the event of illness or injury, and may not be used for any other absence.

In the event that an applicable federal, state or local law provides more favorable benefits or treatment for you than a particular policy in this handbook, then the law applies.
